Dede Wilsey, San Francisco Fine Arts Museums board chair and CEO, is standing by her decision to pay an ailing former museum employee $450,000, despite not obtaining board approval beforehand.

In a memo sent to the board last week and obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle, telling members that the museums under her charge — the deYoung and Legion of Honor — have never been better off and that she did nothing wrong with the payment.

The payment became an issue when former museum CFO Michele Gutierrez filed a complaint with the city and state Attorney General Kamala Harris over the payment last month. Guiterrez was placed on administrative leave soon after the SF Chronicle reported on her complaint.

Read more about the memo and the controversy surrounding Wilsey on SFist.
