The Fine Art Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF), which manages both the de Young and Legion of Honor museums, announced Tuesday that it hired a new director.
Austrian-born Max Hollein will be filling the organization’s top position starting June 3, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Hollein currently lives in Germany, where he is director of three of the country’s notable museums: the Schirn Kunsthalle, Städel Museum and the Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection.
Hollein replaces former director Colin Bailey, who left in April last year for the director position at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City, just two years after taking the FAMSF job. A 12-person committee, led by former Banana Republic president Jack Calhoun, spent the past year searching for Bailey’s replacement.
As director, Hollein will be in charge of 550 employees and an annual budget of $60 million, some of it supplied by the city.
